• Celebrating Diversity at The Canons

  Last week we had a great time learning about diversity and celebrating the many ways in which we are different. We took part in lots of different activities to help us understand the meaning and importance of diversity such as:

  • Reading stories like ‘The Rainbow People’, ‘Shine’ and ‘It’s okay to be different’ and sharing our thoughts on these
  • Investigating the ways in which we are similar and different to our classmates through circle times and discussions
  • Writing a creative piece of writing on the theme of diversity
  • Creating artwork linked to the importance of diversity
  • Watching ‘The Greatest Showman’
  • Completing homework with the help of our families to understand what represents ‘us’.

   

  We ended our week with a day to celebrate diversity at The Canons where we could wear something or bring something in that represented ourselves or our families.

  Some of us:

  • Wore clothing traditional of our culture/faith/nationality
  • Wore clothing to represent a skill/talent we practice such as karate, dancing, gymnastics football, rugby, swimming, fishing…
  • Wore clothing to represent a club that we belong to such as Rainbows, Football, Rugby…
  • Brought in photos of our family
  • Brought in recipes of meals we cook
  • Brought in items, photos or wore clothing to represent festivals we celebrate
  • Brought in medals, certificates, trophies and even a horse to represent the skills and hobbies we practice
  • Taught our classmates how to say some phrases or write some letters in our home language

   

  We enjoyed sharing these with each other and celebrating the many ways in which we are different.

   

  Well done to all the pupils for making our 'day to celebrate how diverse we are' a success, and a huge thank you to parents and carers who supported the children in understanding and celebrating what makes them special!

  

• 'Stations of the Cross' art competition

  We were very pleased with the quality of the work we had submitted for the 'Stations of the Cross' art competition and have displayed all the fabulous artwork in the upper school crush hall. Well done and thank you to everyone that entered from across the school, hopefully you all had an opportunity to think more deeply about your chosen station. Nicola Ugochukwu, our guest judge, from Bedworth Parish Churches has chosen a winner for each station that had an entry. She was very impressed with the links that the children made to Jesus' final journey and with the creativity displayed by some of our budding artists. • Easter Art Competition

  We are running an Easter art competition inspired by the popularity of 'The Walking the way of the Cross' Art trial that was held on the field last week.

   

  It is a school-wide competition, and we want to encourage as many children as possible to enter. It will be based on the Stations of the Cross and we would like to create our own art trail with our own pupils' artwork on display. We will choose a winner for each 'Station' to go on display. 

   

  All the children have been learning about Easter and salvation in their recent RE units of work.

   

  Please look at the newsletter, Seesaw and Class Dojo over the Easter holidays for more information. You can also read through this PowerPoint presentation about it.

   

  The children can represent their chosen station in any creative way that they choose (drawing, painting, collage, sculpture).

   

  Please encourage them to bring all finished artwork in to school during the first week back after Easter to be entered. Ensure the artwork is clearly labelled with the child’s full name, class and the ‘Station’ it represents.

   

  We are looking forward to seeing some creative masterpieces after the Easter break!

• Warwickshire Police - Operation Snap (Updated February 2020)

  For the attention of all Parents / Guardians

  
  Back in October 2019, we introduced you all to ‘Operation Snap’ which was set up to help reduce demand for frontline Policing. We’re aware that the situation regarding parking is a bone of contention for all those affected, either picking up a student, leaving the immediate vicinity or local residents accessing or exiting their own homes. We are also aware that with the presence of marked Police vehicles and uniformed officers, the matters seems to resolve itself for the period of time we are there.
  Members of the public can still, via a secure online form, submit digital footage showing potential traffic offences. It has many other uses, but can utilised for unsafe and illegal parking near to schools. Fines can then be directly issued from this.

  Since the introduction, we can now confirm we have had just under 500 reports resulting in warning letters, fines and reporting for the offences for Bedworth.

  Whilst this is a very good start, we want to keep pushing this to the front of your minds.

  We are aware that the parking facilities are not ideal around some of the schools, however this is not a reasonable excuse and will not be mitigating reason for exclusion.

  Your children’s safety is paramount to us, as it should be to yourselves.

  Please be considerate to road users and pedestrians around the school especially during dropping off and picking up times.

  Police Officers and Police Community Support Officers are still issuing tickets for those causing unnecessary obstruction of the highway.
  
  All students and staff deserve the opportunity to leave the school safely and get home uninjured.

• Pupil Dietary & Medical Information

  **Important information regarding pupil dietary and medical information**

  Please ensure your child’s medical and dietary information is kept up to date.  If an existing pupil's dietary requirements have changed (e.g. no longer dairy intolerant), we require written confirmation to that effect from the child's parent/carer so that we may update our records and our kitchen staff.  If your child has medication in school (e.g. epi pen, inhalers) it is the parent/carers responsibility to check they are valid and in date.
