There are many exciting areas to learn when studying in Year 6!
During the Autumn Term, we will be investigating World War 2. Many different and diverse areas will be studied, some of the highlights are: The Coventry Blitz, The Battle of Britain and the use of the Atomic Bomb. We bring the topic to life with a Veteran’s tea party later in the term, where those with first- hand experience of wartime Britain are invited to share their stories over a cup of tea and a slice of cake. The pupils will also have opportunity to study the Holocaust and this is taught sensitively following a visit to the Holocaust Centre in Nottingham.
In RE, we will be focusing on the Christian topics of God and Incarnation. The pupils will be able to explore and discuss some of the big questions when it comes to faith. They will also have the opportunity to study Judaism – its beliefs and festivals.
For the Spring Term, our work is based on Natural Disasters. Pupils will look in depth at the causes and consequences of earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis and begin to understand how destructive our planet can be.
Our new RE topics is Salvation. The pupils will focus on the build up to Easter and more specifically the last week in the life of Jesus. Starting with his triumphant entry into Jerusalem and finishing with his death and resurrection.
During the summer term we turn our minds to Ancient Egypt. Some of the highlights of this topic are our study into how the pyramids were built and a look at the life of one of the most famous of all Egyptian pharaohs – Tutankhamun.
In RE, pupils will study how different beliefs express themselves in such ways as: art, architecture, charity and generosity.
A range of Science topics will be studied during Science weeks distributed throughout the year. The topics include:
Micro-organisms, Reversible and irreversible changes, Habitats and Evolution, Light and Body, Circulatory and Skeletal systems.
We endeavour to make each session as practical as possible.
Throughout the year, we will also be preparing for KS2 SATs in May, which the children always work extremely hard towards. Maths and Literacy are studied each day to ensure your child is as prepared as possible to sit the exams. All questions about SATs will be answered during the various evening sessions we offer during the year.
SATs are followed by our residential trip to Kingswood in Wales, where the children will get to experience a whole host of exciting activities and have chance to unwind after all of their hard work.
