There are many exciting areas to learn when studying in Year 6!
During the Autumn Term, we will be investigating World War 2. Many different and diverse areas will be studied, some of the highlights are: The Coventry Blitz, The Battle of Britain and the use of the Atomic Bomb. The pupils will also study the effect of the Blitz on our local area, in particular, the Coventry Cathedral. In RE, we will be focusing on the Christian topic of Incarnation. The pupils will be able to explore and discuss some of the big questions when it comes to faith. They will also have the opportunity to study Judaism – its beliefs and festivals. During Geography lessons they will learn about migration of people in Britain, how it has changed over time and the impact it has on our lives today.
For the Spring Term, our work is based on Natural Disasters. Pupils will look in depth at the causes and consequences of earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis and begin to understand how destructive our planet can be. Our new RE topic is Salvation. The pupils will focus on the build up to Easter and more specifically the last week in the life of Jesus. Starting with his triumphant entry into Jerusalem and finishing with his death and resurrection. They will also consider how religion is expressed through art and architecture in both the Muslim and Christian faiths.
During the Summer Term, we turn our minds to the Tudors. Some of the highlights of this topic are our study of a Shakespeare play, hopefully culminating in our end of year performance. In RE, pupils will look at the fundamentals of Humanism and consider the importance of Ahimsa, Grace and Ummah, whilst making comparisons between world faiths.
A range of Science topics will be studied throughout the year. The topics include:
Micro-organisms, Electricity, Classification and Evolution, Light and the Circulatory and Skeletal systems. We endeavour to make each session as practical as possible.
We hope to produce art work inspired by artists such as John Piper and Katsushika Hokusai as part of Arts Week and linked with topic work. Whilst we will also be refining Design and Technology skills through cooking WW2 recipes and designing and making a Tudor house.
Throughout the year, we will also be preparing for KS2 SATs in May, which the children always work extremely hard towards. Maths and Literacy are studied each day to ensure your child is as prepared as possible to sit the exams. All questions about SATs will be answered during the various evening sessions we are hoping to offer during the year.
If possible, SATs are usually followed by our residential trip to Kingswood in Wales, where the children will get to experience a whole host of exciting activities and have chance to unwind after all of their hard work.
