At The Canons…

Geography at the Canons will inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world, its people and their own place within it; taking into consideration our pupil’s lived experiences and their cultural capital whilst expanding their opportunities to live life in all its fullness. It will encourage them to provoke and answer questions about their natural and human worlds. Teaching will equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As pupils progress, their growing knowledge about the world will help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills provide the frameworks and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time. Geography is a foundation subject in the National Curriculum. The fundamental skills, knowledge and concepts of the subject are set out in the National Curriculum.

Geography at the Canons is important because:

• The knowledge contained in it is essential to our understanding of the world in which we live, local and global.
• The skills and knowledge of geography are life skills.
• Concern for the environment is essential in order to ensure a quality future for all.

The aims of geography at the Canons are:

• To enable children to develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places – both terrestrial and marine – including their defining physical and human characteristics.
• To increase children’s knowledge of the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world.
• To develop a variety of other geographical skills needed to collect, analyse and interpret a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork that deepen their understanding of geographical processes.
